Have you ever felt something like "You need to change for me to feel okay" or "There is something wrong with me/others/life and until it's fixed I can't be at peace."
These kind of feelings and beliefs can all be boiled down to: "I am right that lack is real - either in reference to me, you or life." And, at a certain level, this feeling of discontent feels good. When we are very honest we can get in touch with how good it feels to stick with the 'I am right that something is wrong' level of conditioning.
